No Such Thing as a Free Breakfast!

12 December 2011 ::

Most sane TCU students shutter at the prospect of slogging their way through finals week. Unhealthy levels of caffeine are consumed, a night out means reserving a study room for your closest group project, and social media becomes a therapeutic outlet for frustration. Flannel is your best friend, sleep a forgotten indulgence, and exercise… ha.

But for JVR students, one exam main stay is revered above the rest, and brings light to the weary mass of undergrads. Finals Week Breakfast.

Each year I anxiously await finals, not because of ever-growing test anxiety, but because my tummy knows that for a solid week I’ll be enjoying a wonderful morning pick me up. When students are provided free food the change in disposition is, quite honestly, miraculous. Our brightest minds should analyze the power a catered breakfast possesses because something tells me it could do the world a lot of good.

Burritos, fresh fruit, French toast, eggs, and pastries! The smorgasbord of new and exciting delicacies is, to borrow a phrase, scintillating. The staff will even provide you Splenda for your fifth black coffee of the day!

But beyond the food and never ending coffee (oh the coffee…) something much deeper is at work. JVR students of all years unite, battered and bruised from one to many Quizlets, and enjoy the conversation and companionship that a meal together provides. Friends laugh about their giddy exhaustion and the best YouTube video that’s distracted them. Strangers meet and instantly bond over an incredibly vague essay prompt, or the jubilation of their week coming to an end. This meal maybe the last at TCU for some before they travel abroad or graduate, and they chose to spend it in the warmth of the honors living room.

Honors student might get out of bed for the food, but we will always stay for the friends and companions that make JVR our home.

We’d love to hear your thoughts. Click the comment box below and leave a note for your favorite blogger. They will receive your message. And . . . as always . . . GO FROGS!

    Too sad that this could be the last breakfast week for some.

    I could not have said it better! The honors breakfasts during finals week get me out of bed in the morning. My honors roommate and I look forward to this part of finals week every year. THANK YOU JVR!

    Also, the caffeine and finals comments are brilliant.

    The Honors Breakfast is definitely what keeps me going during this week! Blue Mesa today was INCREDIBLE and the breakfast is definitely the highlight of my day

    I completely agree! I don’t live in Milton this year, so it’s rare I get that intimate level of interaction with the rest of the students in the JVR. It’s such a refreshing change to see everyone, even if it’s only for ten minutes between cramming, and that sense of camaraderie lasts the rest of the day.

    Well said! So glad these breakfasts are such a huge hit.
