One of my favorite Honors College traditions is breakfast. I’ve always been a huge breakfast fan; it’s my favorite (and most important!) meal of the day, so the breakfast tradition really sealed the deal for me to come to TCU. (Just kidding, TCU has way more than just breakfast!) However, there really is something special about this community builder.
Honors Breakfasts are held on the first Monday of the month and every day during finals week. Every time features a different restaurant, such as Panera, Central Market Catering, or Z’s Café, as well as coffee and juice. They are held all morning in the honors area of Scharbauer Hall, so Honors students are able to come and go as they please, and the faculty members are always there to talk.
It’s the people at the honors breakfasts that make them so great. I’m in a nutrition class for my nursing major this spring, and when talking about the foundations of the science we also learned why food is so important in society. Not only does it provide energy, something every student needs, but it also provides community.
Honors students of every class year are there, and the faculty always make sure to attend. Conversation is great, and I find myself as a freshman taking away a new valuable lesson from someone each time. Whether it’s advice on what classes to take from someone older, or learning about new study skills and scholarship opportunities from professors, I always find myself coming away with much more than just a full stomach.
I think the honors breakfasts really speak to the “Roach Approach.” The honors college is small for the reasons of community. There’s a special bond between honors students, intellectually and emotionally, and it’s really hard to describe. But hey, don’t just take it from me, come sit down and smell the coffee!
