“What are the greatest perks of being in honors?”

I’m constantly asked this loaded question. Students today — we’re all about the perks. And to be honest, the Honors College doesn’t disappoint. But this weekend, I was reminded of one of the sweeter perks of being in honors, a bonus often buried under the free breakfasts and early registration and shrouded by the discussion-based classes and enthusiastic professors: the home decor.

Maybe it’s part of being a college student who refuses to spend beaucoup bucks on unnecessaries…maybe it’s the simple fact that free things always are more aesthetically pleasing…

Whatever it is, I have become increasingly thankful for the Honors College’s continual supply of the most necessary apartment decorating item: flowers. From roses to lillies, a vast array of pots and vases filled with floral arrangements have graced my living room, scenting the air with their sweet smell. My roommates and I have learned to look forward and “stalk” honors events. We’ve perfected the technique of snagging those dazzling plant life centerpieces and have become the expected owners of whatever remaining flowers are left behind when the other blossom-hungry students have had their fill.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how to make the most of the available perks of the Honors College.
