AMBERLEE D.

Hometown: Albuquerque, New Mexico

Major: Nursing

What I want to do with my major: I want to love people…specifically by caring for the marginalized in developing countries as a missionary nurse.

Campus involvement: Honors Cabinet, Honors College Community Service, TCU Ambassadors, Harris Associates, Frogs Around the World, Study Abroad Ambassador

Why I chose TCU: Two words: Purple scrubs.

…but really, I remember the harrowing days of anticipation when I thought my entire fate was wrapped up in going to the right school.  I was convinced that if I chose the “wrong” school, I would end up in prison or living in a cardboard box.  Looking back, I see that my perception was highly skewed in those days. But I actually don’t regret that misplaced anguish, because if it weren’t for the traumatic anxiety, I wouldn’t have been so relieved to find the peace that came with choosing TCU, a school where I could develop the gifts God has given me, exercise my passions, grow in and out of the classroom, develop as a well-rounded individual, and…wear purple every day.

Why I’m glad I joined the JVR: The best friends and closest community on campus (I might be biased), free stuff, and professors who are there for you whenever you have a breakdown.

Favorite place on TCU’s Campus: It’s a tossup between the government stacks in the library (which have a copy of the Nuremberg trials) the swing in front of Jarvis, or the frozen yogurt machine in the BLUU

Now if someone would only invent a portable froyo machine so I could eat cold goodies while simultaneously reading and swinging…

Favorite JVR memory: Sitting in the hallway of the honors dorm freshman year, discussing everything from the philosophy to knock knock jokes.  The diversity within the honors college and the willingness of each student to participate in controversial debates to broaden their horizons will always represent the essence of the JVR to me.

Coolest TCU or JVR experience: Studying abroad in Firenze, Italia, where I got to eat gelato every day, mosey past aesthetic masterpieces on the way to class, and lose myself in the Italian culture. Literally. Those darn winding streets…

Favorite TV show and why: House, because I can pretend I’m studying for my nursing classes by watching it.

Three unusual things about myself:

  1. I can say the alphabet backwards in 2.6 seconds.
  2. I’m a lefty (we use 5% more of our brains).
  3. I have a pet llama.

…that was a lie.
