Hometown: Arlington, TX. I’m a native!
Major: Accounting, Honors & Leadership emphasis
What I want to do with my major: I definitely don’t want to crunch numbers my whole life. My goal is to gain some international business experience before someday returning home and starting up my own consulting practice.
Campus involvement: John V. Roach Honors Cabinet, Beta Alpha Psi, BNSF Next Generation Leadership Program, Professional Program in Accounting, Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization, Clark Scholar.
Why I chose TCU: TCU was actually a surprising choice for me – I had always thought of myself as getting as far away from home as possible. Coming to the campus and talking to some of the professors really changed my perspective on what life could be like here. I love the student-faculty ratio, and the fact that I know most of my professors on a personal level. Ultimately, it came down to my scholarship and the opportunity I had for a more intensive, personal undergraduate experience.
Why I’m glad I joined the JVR: The lifelong friendships I’ve made through Honors have had a real impact on the person I’ve become. Being able to learn from your peers is a tremendous advantage you don’t find everywhere, and getting to see people I’ve known since freshman year grow and change over the last four years is an opportunity I wouldn’t trade for the world!
Favorite Honors class: My favorite Honors class was Nature of Values, an upper-division colloquia course. Not only was I the youngest (think: timid sophomore with a bunch of seniors), but I was also the only guy. By the time the semester was over I felt like I was Mel Gibson from ‘What Women Want’.
Favorite place on TCU’s Campus: I love standing on the steps by Frog Fountain and looking out over the campus commons and clock tower.
Favorite JVR memory: I had a chance to go with JVR to Europe over summer break, and while we were in Italy we had a day trip entirely to ourselves. A few friends and I planned out a trip to Venice, and on the way back our train was delayed by four hours! We passed the time playing cards and having dance parties in Bologna until the train finally came . . . at 2 o’clock in the morning. The funny thing is half of the cars didn’t have electricity, so we ended up having a great conversation in the dark watching the Italian countryside pass us by.
Coolest TCU or JVR experience: I’ve had a ton of amazing opportunities through JVR, but one of the coolest things I ever did was go Class IV white water rafting with Honors over in Switzerland. Our guide was in the process of explaining to us the importance of avoiding the rocks in the rapids when he accidentally steered us into one! Our raft started to deflate and we had to paddle over to the side of the river – talk about a huge adrenaline rush!
Favorite TV show and why: I’m a big fan of How I Met Your Mother – the characters on the show are priceless and couldn’t characterize my group of friends and I better.
Three unusual things about myself:
- My eyes are an odd mix of hazel and green. I know everyone thinks it’s trendy to have “mood” eyes, but when I’m sick they appear greener and are more sensitive to light. Kind of … unusual.
- I spend more days dressed in business casual than I do in casual in any given week. I think this qualifies as both unusual and depressing.
- The volume knob in my car must always be on an even number. Always.
