Hometown: Austin, TX
Major: Writing and Art History
What I want to do with my major: I either want to go into publishing and editing or appraise art for an auction house and eventually move into art insurance. I’m going to be a super spy that tracks stolen art.
Campus involvement:
I am a member of the Student Ambassadors program that does outreach to prospective students. If you ever decide to do a Monday at TCU (which you totally should) I might eat with you or give you a campus tour!
I am also a part of theCrew, which is the campus’ event planning organization. We plan 3 events on campus every day. These events could be as big as the annual concert in the commons (the Fray was awesome this year!), as small as a gourmet s’more bar, or as strange as armadillo racing.
I am a member of the John V. Roach Honors Cabinet, which is a unique experience in which you provide programing for the Honors College, and work alongside professors to be the voice of the Honors College students.
I am a member of the Chancellor’s Leadership Program which is a 3.5-year leadership program based on the social change model. It helps you reflect on the type of leader you are and want to be, and how to leverage your skills to do so. It ends in a culminating legacy project in which you go into the community and apply the skills you have learned to create a social change you are passionate about.
I’m also in Frog Aides which is a freshman student government leadership program that helps you define your leadership skills and how to use those to get involved in leadership positions and make a difference on campus.
Why I chose TCU:
The thing that stood out about TCU was its unique sense of community. Students, faculty, and staff do everything they can support one another. I give and have been given so much attention at TCU, and I don’t think I would have had that experience at other universities. From Lieu who learns every student’s name as she swipes them in to the BLUU, to my archaeology professor who cuts out every magazine article he thinks will interest me, and everything in between, we’re just one big, happy family.
Why I’m glad I joined the JVR:
The Honors College has afforded me many opportunities I wouldn’t have otherwise had. The classes are unique in that they teach you a way to think rather than simply the specifics of a course. This has enabled me to translate class skills to experiences outside of the classroom. The Honors College also provides events like special lectures from authors and people included in the books we read for class. There are also many study abroad opportunities that are only available to honors students. In general, the Honors College provides many extra opportunities to supplement your education, and, above all, provides a family for all honors students.
Favorite Honors class:
My favorite class by far has been Literature and Civilization II. This class is interesting because it integrates the history of literature with new age literary techniques. We analyze American short stories from the 1800s to the present, but we keep track of our literary findings and progress in blog of our reading experiences. We also become more globally aware by partnering with students from the TCU international student program and again keep track of our reflections of meetings with those partners on our blogs.
Favorite place on TCU’s Campus:
My favorite places on campus are the Milton Daniel lounges. All of my best memories happen in these lounges: studying along side my best friends, singing with my friend Stephen at 2 in the morning, Friday movie nights, and my friend from China’s first birthday party. Milton Daniel has truly become my home away from home.
Favorite JVR memory:
My favorite event put on by the Honors College was Night of the Living Professors. We basically had a Halloween party with our professors. It was a great opportunity to get to know our professors on a personal level. Building those relationships with professors has really enhanced my learning experiences in their classes.
Coolest TCU or JVR experience:
I got to meet the Fray before the annual TCU concert. The school left the commons open for the afternoon, so I decided to go watch the band warm up. They played a song that still has yet to be released for the 20 of us that were watching, and just joked around with us. It was so fun to have such an informal experience with the Fray.
Favorite TV show and why:
Grey’s Anatomy is hands down my favorite show. I don’t have a good answer as to why. I’ve just watched every season, and I love all the characters. I just can’t stop at this point. I have to be loyal to Derek, Meredith, and Christina.
Three unusual things about myself:
I really enjoy burned food, especially burned popcorn. Everyone blamed me when burned popcorn set off the Milton Daniel fire alarms at 5am, but I promise it wasn’t me!
It’s my lifetime aspiration to be Belle at Disney World.
I’ve been in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
